Sisters Join Call for an End to Racism & Violence

June 2, 2020 | Posted in Statements

We, Sisters of the Humility of Mary, unite our voices, hearts and prayers with the many groups and organizations that are speaking out against the racism and violence directed to people of color in our own cities and country.

“I can’t breathe.”

We, the Sisters of the Humility of Mary, are deeply outraged by the continual violence against people of color in our country.

We are united in grief over the senseless killings of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and countless others.

We stand in solidarity with our Black sisters and brothers in demanding justice and join our voices in calling for an end to racism in all forms.

We acknowledge our own responsibility for the evil of racism. We ask forgiveness for our failures in awareness and in speaking out more effectively against this evil.

We pray that our hearts may be opened to hear the cries of our black sisters and brothers, that we find the strength and courage to respond to their call and find ways to create space for everyone to breathe.

We commit ourselves to do our part in bringing about more abundant life by holding each other accountable and rooting out systemic racial injustices as we share the love of Jesus through the message of the Gospel and the witness of our lives.

Words are easy, and the real work lies before each one of us. The Anti-Racism Task Force will be meeting to help us consider appropriate actions to go along with our words. How will we respond to the needs of this very difficult time?
